  • General Car Security

    • Always lock your car.
    • Close all windows when the car is parked.
    • Never leave valuables in plain view, lock them in the boot or take them with you.
    • Use security systems such as car alarms or if this is not possible at least have security stickers on the car so as to deter potential theives.
    • If any valuable stereo equipment is in the car, remove the face of the radio/CD Player (if at all possible) and put it out of sight. Try to make this a habit!!
    • Get an immobiliser installed into your car.
    • Steering wheel locks though not entirely effective against professionals are good for stopping many joyriders. There are also new products that are kind of like a steering wheel lock except they hook onto your accelerator and brake pedals making it extremely hard for someone to steal your vehicle.
    • Lock your car even if you’re only stepping away for a short time and even if it’s in front of your home.
    • Park in well-lit areas. Avoid parking near forests, large vans or trucks, or anything else that limits your visibility.
    • Try to park if possible in a carpark with an attendant. Leave only the ignition key, with no identification.
    • Turn wheels sharply toward the curb when parking (this makes it harder for thieves to tow your car.
    • Keep the keys to your home and car separate and never attach a tag with your name and address to your key ring.
    • Park in well-lit, heavily populated areas. Trust your instincts, if something doesn’t feel right, find another place to park.
    • Avoid parking next to occupied vehicles.
    • Be aware of your surroundings.
    • Take note of emergency/pay phones near where you have parked in case you need to use them.
