Closed Circuit TV (CCTV)
Statistics point to major reductions in the amount of crime being committed where CCTV cameras are installed. These statistics have shown that simply installing a CCTV system can reduce crime in the areas covered by that system by over 90%. As businesses and building owners confirm that they are having similar results in many different type of businesses you will appreciate why CCTV is seen by many as the best system for deterrent and detection and is a sound investment in property and employee protection.
Generally, once a visible camera system is installed only fools will attempt to perpetrate offences within it’s field of view. Perpetrators are often recognized and caught as a result of the images captured by a suitable system.
Other uses of closed circuit TV systems may be production control in factories, warehouse and building security, asset control, a deterrent to fraudulent public liability claims, traffic monitoring, medical applications, teaching applications, observation of hazardous areas, environmental observation etc… Low voltage systems are also available for installation in trucks, buses and earth moving equipment. This is for safety when manoeuvring, allowing the driver to see any dangers which may be previously out of sight.
There are several types of zoom or wide angle cameras and lenses to choose from. Cameras now come in every shape and size allowing you to be only as conspicuous as you need to be.
For a closed circuit TV system to work effectively cameras, lenses, housings, multiplexers, cabling and image storage devices must all be matched to achieve the desired resultant picture quality, size and frame rate.
Digital Video Recording Systems
Advantages of digital video recording and image storage attached to a CCTV system compared to the older style VCR tape include:
- Cost saving – no need to replace VCR tapes.
- No reliance on staff to change and catalogue tapes.
Simultaneous recording and playback of events rather than having to stop a tape and rewind it when searching for an incident.
Remote access available for viewing images and events.
File based image storage rather than shelves of catalogued VCR tapes.
Images and incident records are portable and readily transferred between machines, still images can be easily printed or emailed.
Images or incidents can be searched by time & date, incident type or camera.
- Some systems can be integrated with alarm systems to provide real time alarm triggering if movement is detected within specified locations.
- Systems are available that allow multiple user network viewing and playback – view live and recorded video on a networked PC.
Some systems allow cross platform viewing from within a web page.
Systems are available that can be accessed via Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), ISDN, ADSL or dial up.
Files can be readily backed up, archived or transferred to other storage media e.g.. CD-ROM, CD-RW, zip/jazz drive or other high density backup media.
Any video surveillance can be monitored and/or recorded to either VCR tape or digital storage for a visual record. These images may be stored for future reference. Camera systems provide a deterrent to pilferage/ unauthorized access and can also provide visual evidence for public liability or worker compensation disputes.
